Chris Powell has hailed keeper Jed Steer and challenged Huddersfield Town to keep three clean sheets running for the first time since 2010-11.

The on-loan Aston Villa stopper will go into home action against Derby County on Saturday aiming to build on bright performances against Ipswich Town and MK Dons.

Steer, 23, who has just extended his loan for a second month as well as signing a new long-term deal at Villa, made his seventh Town appearance as MK were beaten 2-0.

The Ipswich game finished goalless, and Powell said: “Jed has put in two good performances in two different kinds of games.

“He didn’t have as many shots to save against MK, but he still made some good decisions and commanded his area well.

Keepers want clean sheets just like managers. They guarantee you at least a point and they help breed confidence.

“We have had two in a row now, and two positive results, and that has set us up nicely for a big game against Derby.

“We built on what we did against Ipswich when we played MK, and now we have to dig deep and build on both those performances against Derby.”

Paul Clement’s Rams, complete with former Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield, have a Wednesday night game at Blackburn Rovers.

After a sluggish start to the season, they have won five and drawn the other of their last six league games.

Town’s last run of three successive clean sheets came in a run of five in March and April 2011.

They started with 1-0 wins at Bristol Rovers and Brentford, followed up with a 0-0 home draw against Swindon, beat Notts County at the John Smith’s Stadium and then went to Tranmere and won 2-0 (all in League One).
