Joe Murphy says he’s surprised but happy to be in the spotlight as Huddersfield Town prepare for the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Boss Chris Powell’s decision to leave out Alex Smithies in the wake of interest from Queens Park Rangers meant a second successive start for the experienced keeper against Blackburn Rovers.

The Republic of Ireland international had featured in the 2-1 Capital One Cup first-round defeat by Notts County.

He helped Town to a 1-1 draw against Blackburn in what was his sixth appearance for the club since joining from Coventry City in June 2014.

“I didn’t expect to be in the side,” said the Dublin-born 33-year-old.

“When I saw the teamsheet I was surprised, but happy to be playing.

“Everybody wants to play. That’s what we’re all in the game for, to play football not sit on the bench.

Now that I seem to have a chance hopefully I can take it.

Murphy, who played one play-off game on loan to Chesterfield last season, was pleased to see Sean Scannell return from injury against Blackburn.

“We missed him against Notts County,” said the ex-Tranmere Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Scunthorpe United player. “He was the main man last season and our main threat. He always seems to create something when he’s got the ball.

“And even without the ball he attracts two or three players to him, which opens up space for others.”

Chris Hughton’s Brighton arrive in search of a fourth win in four this season.

The Seagulls started out with a 1-0 home Championship victory over Nottingham Forest, then won by the same scoreline in their Capital One Cup first-round tie at Southend United, Kazenga LuaLua geting both goals.

Newly-signed Israel international striker Tomer Hemed put away a last-gasp penalty to clinch Saturday’s 2-1 triumph at Fulham.

Former Bristol City, West Ham United and MK Dons striker Sam Baldock scored Brighton’s other goal.

Eddie Ilderton (Tyne and Wear) will referee the game.
