TOWN Ladies scored a memorable win over Manchester City before going down to Liverpool Feds in the final of the Umbro Women’s Senior Cup.

Games were played over 40 minutes, and Town, freshly promoted to the Northern Combination after winning the North-East Regional League, beat Llandudno Junction 6-0 and Dudley United 3-2 on day one.

Wins over Stockport County (3-0) and Northwich Vixens (3-1) on day two set up a semi-final clash with City, Town going through 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw thanks to a fine spot-kick save by Laura Carter.

Despite injuries and fatigue taking their toll, Town put up a spirited display in their final meeting with Liverpool, when Emily Heckler shot narrowly wide and Kate Mallin had a goal controversially disallowed.

Heckler was Town’s top scorer over the tournament with seven while Mallin grabbed three. Emily Cook got two and Sarah Griffiths, Aleathia Smith and Jo Symington one each.

Town continue their pre-season schedule with a friendly against Women’s Premier League North side Leeds City Vixens at Grange Moor on Sunday (2.30).

The Under 14s came out tops in both the Garforth Rangers seven-a-side and Rothwell six-aside tournaments.
