On-loan Huddersfield Town full-back Jake Carroll helped Partick Thistle progress to the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup with a 1-0 win over St Mirren.

It was the 22-year-old’s fourth appearance for the Glasgow side, who also included ex-Town men Nathan Eccleston, their scorer, and Kallum Higginbotham.

Thistle, beaten 2-1 at home by St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership last Friday, go to Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Town’s other loaned-out player, midfielder Duane Holmes, has made five substitute appearances for League II leaders Bury, who head for Exeter City on Saturday.

Former St Patrick’s Athletic player Carroll was loaned to Bury last season while Town academy product Holmes, 19, had a five-match stint at Yeovil Town.

Carroll has made seven Town appearances, all starts, and Holmes 20, 18 of them from the bench.

Meanwhile, Championship leaders Nottingham Forest are hoping former Town player Jack Hunt will have recovered from an ankle injury in time to play against Tottenham in the Capital One Cup third round tonight at White Hart Lane.

Hunt is on loan to the City Ground club from Crystal Palace.
