BENIK AFOBE has signed a contract extension at Arsenal.

As the Gunners snapped up Finland Under 19 defender Carl Jenkinson from Charlton, they also tied Afobe, Chuks Aneke and Dutch youth international Oguzhan Ozyakup to long-term deals at The Emirates.

It’s a measure of how highly Arsene Wenger rates the 18-year-old Town loan striker Afobe, who grabbed eight goals in helping the Galpharm club reach the League I play-off final in the season just finished.

Town manager Lee Clark has already confirmed that while the inquiry will be made, it’s unlikely Afobe will return to Town because Arsenal might favour a Championship club if he’s loaned out again.

Afobe had been due, of course, to play for England in the Euro Under 19 Championships but is currently recovering from a knee ligament injury suffered in Town’s play-off final defeat to Peterborough at Old Trafford.

Popular with the Galpharm faithful, who enjoyed his energetic contributions to the front line, Afobe has been with Arsenal since the age of eight and was awarded his first professional contract in February last year.

He rose through the ranks to play Under 18 and Reserve team football for the club while earning England caps at all age groups.
