Mark Lillis believes a centre-back and a striker would be perfect additions to Town’s squad – whether or not he remains in the hot seat.

The interim boss says he would be willing to talk to the board about the ongoing managerial vacancy, but only after today’s big Championship game at Watford.

Lillis will have new QPR loan left-back Jack Robinson available at Vicarage Road.

Fans are waiting to see whether there are any further additions before the transfer window shuts at 11.00pm on Monday.

And progress over the new boss is expected to be made during the forthcoming two-week international break, with Neil Lennon confirmed as being out of the running.

While chairman Dean Hoyle initially indicated he would make an external appointment, stand-in manager Lillis, the club’s academy chief, has proved a hit with players and fans alike.

“The situation hasn’t arisen, but I am enjoying my current role and I would be prepared to talk to the board at the right time,” he said.

“But it’s not a straightforward thing, because I came here to run the academy, and I am two and half years into a five-year plan.

“Academies are a massive part of football these days and I enjoy the challenge of running it at this club, so there would be that to
consider.

“I speak with the board regularly, but this has been a busy period, and the focus has been on matches.

“After Watford, we have some breathing space, so that will give us all the chance to take stock and decide how to go forward.”

On the arrival of Robinson, Lillis said: “He is a good, young player who will improve the squad.

“We are still looking at other potential signings, particularly at centre-half and up top, so we will see what, if anything, develops.”
