Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell hailed the collective effort of his defence for holding out Blackburn Rovers as his spirited charges secured a 0-0 draw at Ewood Park.

Jordan Rhodes' second-half penalty miss ultimately proved pivotal as the former Terriers goal machine dragged his spot-kick wide and Town held on manfully thereon, withstanding a spell of Rovers pressure thanks to some great goalkeeping from Alex Smithies and resolute defending.

Town themselves nearly snatched a winner with Nahki Wells missing their best opening late on, but Powell was delighted with his side's application nonetheless.

"It was a collective effort, absolutely, from the front boys all the way to the back," he told reporters.

"But I am pleased for Alex, because I have been saying we need clean sheets.

"We have had a couple since I have been here and I suppose with his concentration levels being tested and then making that wonderful save from [Lee] Williamson and then a near-post one from [Joshua] King.

"I'm pleased for him because the players dug in, Mark Hudson really had to dig in today because of an injury to his hand but it was a pleasing performance and a collective effort defensively from everyone."

Having secured back-to-back league wins for the first time since December, Town were looking for a third win on the bounce at Ewood Park and although it did not arrive, it did little to dampen the manager's spirits.

"Yeah, I've got to be [satisfied] after the week we have had," Powell said.

"Seven points is a very good return for us, especially with two games away at two tricky players and the resilience and the commitment from the players was there for all to see.

"We earned the luck really. We knew there would be a response from Blackburn after their performance on Tuesday which I went to see.

"They are a decent side, they had a lot more possession especially at the start of the second half but we hung in there and actually could have nicked it towards the end.

"So it's been a good week for us leading up to the international break and I have got to be very proud of their efforts today."

Powell was forced into one change from the Wolves win, with Jonathan Hogg dropping out for last weekend's two-goal hero Nahki Wells and it resulted in a alteration in the setup as a result, something the team worked on in the build-up to the game.

"It was a slightly different shape," Powell revealed.

"I knew Jonathan Hogg was struggling from Thursday and obviously Nahki [Wells] missed out on Wednesday so I knew he would be fresh.

"I just asked a slightly different role of the two wide players and the two central midfielders.

"You don't have much time to work on stuff because you are recovering and then all of a sudden you are a day away from a game so we walked through it yesterday and we talked about it.

"I trust them, they know the game and they know their roles and as long as we give them the right guidance then they can go out and play like they did today.

"And even when things are going against you and you're under pressure, that they can naturally work it out for themselves and we give them the help to make sure we get a performance and a points return.

"We got a point today and a clean sheet, I've got to be quite happy with that."

Rhodes' penalty miss against his former employers was one of the main talking points post-match, but Powell refuted the idea that the occasion had got to him.

"Well, with Jordan [Rhodes] you have got to be on your guard from minute one right until the end.

"He's got a terrific goal record here at Blackburn and obviously at Huddersfield but it's gone for us today.

"Most days he will put them away and it's just really pleasing for me and my team, my football club.

"Jordan will move on because I'm sure the next time he gets a pen, he will go up and take it and most probably score."
