Chris Powell is optimistic Jonathan Hogg will be back when Huddersfield Town return to Championship action in a fortnight.

The midfielder missed Saturday’s goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers because of a groin niggle picked up at Wolves last Wednesday.

The manager, who has been pleased with the former Watford man’s form, revealed it was touch and go as to whether he played.

“Hoggy was willing, but I took the decision out of his hands, because I didn’t want to risk making things worse,” he said.

“It was a shame, because he’s been excellent, getting better and better in my opinion.

“But had he aggravated the injury, we could have been looking at a spell out, and this way, he should be okay.”

After the latest international break, Town host Blackpool on Saturday week and Brighton the following Tuesday, October 21.

They go to Ipswich Town on Saturday, October 25.

Powell watched Blackpool clinch their first win of the season at Cardiff City’s expense on Friday, when Francois Zoko scored in a 1-0 success at Bloomfield Road.

“It will be another tough test, and we must stay focused over the next fortnight,” he added.

“This week will be a mix of recuperation and training, then we’ll start specific preparations for Blackpool.”

Jon Stead scored twice as Town kicked off their Final Third Development League Cup group games with a 3-1 win over Mansfield Town at PPG Canalside.

Martin Paterson opened the scoring for an experienced Town side, with Oscar Gobern back after a toe injury.

Town have an Under 21 Premier League Cup tie against Barnsley at the John Smith’s Stadium tomorrow (1.00).
