Chris Powell says Huddersfield Town’s close-season work in the transfer market will be more a case of tweaking than a major overhaul.

The boss, whose side are 16th ahead of the home derby against Rotherham United, believes he has the nucleus of a competitive Championship squad but there is need for “improvement in one or two areas.”

“There have been discussions between myself, (chairman) Dean Hoyle, (football operations director) Ross Wilson and (chief executive) Nigel Clibbens,” he explained.

“Those will continue as we look to add players here and there over the summer.

“I think we have the basis of a good squad, and I want us to finish this season as positively as possible.

“We need some momentum to take into the summer and to begin the next pre-season with.”

Town, beaten in consecutive away games at Charlton Athletic and Brentford, were 12th after a 3-0 home win over Reading in their last home match.

And Powell is desperate to return to the top half of the table as he approaches a run of three home matches in four (after Rotherham, it’s Birmingham City away, then Norwich City and Fulham at the John Smith’s Stadium).

“We were 21st when I came in as manager in September,” he said.

“Since we beat Bolton Wanderers at the end of last year, we have veered between 14th and 18th, other than when we made the top half after we beat Reading.

“People will say the table doesn’t lie, but I want to be better than our current position and I believe these players can get us higher.

“There have been some good results as well as some disappointing ones, and we need to be more consistent.

“Our defending has to be better and we need a response to the last two games.

“We didn’t do ourselves justice at either Charlton or Brentford.

“Our fans went to both games in great numbers, and we didn’t give them enough.”
