Chris Powell hailed the battling display which brought Huddersfield Town a point at Birmingham City and said: “I’d rather have had all three, but at least I got the kind of performance I was looking for.”

The manager had demanded a big improvement after three successive losses culminating in a dismal 2-0 home derby defeat by Rotherham United.

“It was a very good response after an horrendous week with the three defeats,” said Powell, whose side nonetheless slipped to 18th in the Championship, nine points above the relegation zone.

“We knew we had to get something from this game.

“We set the tone from minute one and undeservedly went a goal behind (to David Cotterill in the 10th minute).

“I thought we were on the front foot at that stage and we continued to take the game to them, even though we had that setback.”

Former Birmingham junior player Joe Lolley levelled in the 27th minute.

“I felt it was a deserved equaliser,” added Powell.

“And at half-time we could have been ahead. Jacob Butterfield flashed one across the face of goal and Joel Lynch forced a great save from Darren Randolph.

“The second half was quite even, but we had further chances.

“And what was good was that we started to pass the ball again.

“We look better when we are on the front foot and when we pass and move.”

Powell picked out skipper Mark Hudson for special praise.

“I thought our determination was encapsulated by my captain,” he said.

“Mark has been a driving force in training and continued that approach on the pitch.

“There was a steely determination about the team to get something and he led the way.

“Birmingham have been on a good run, so this was a tough game for us, but we fully deserved what we got.”

Ahead of the Tuesday night home clash with Norwich City, Powell has concerns over forward Harry Bunn, who was forced off after 20 minutes with a recurrence of a hamstring problem, and Jack Robinson (knee).

“Harry had trained well and declared himself fit, so to lose him was a blow, but Sean Scannell came on and showed up well,” continued Powell.
