Chris Powell says having two talented right wingers in Sean Scannell and Joe Lolley in his Huddersfield Town squad presents with a happy dilemma.

Scannell has been a stand-out performer under Powell while Lolley scored his first home goal to clinch Saturday’s 2-2 Championship draw with Blackburn Rovers.

Powell brought Lolley off the bench early in the second half, switching Scannell to the left to allow the former Kidderminster Harriers player to take up his favoured role on the right.

“Joe is left-footed, but prefers to play on the right,” explained Powell. “I understand that having played against and managed quite a few who like the ‘wrong’ side.

“It means that the pitch tends to open up, and if the first touch is good, there are plenty of possibilities to pass, cross or shoot.

“It can also cause problems for full-backs, of which I used to be one, because you’re never sure which way your opponent is going to go.”

Lolley, 22, has scored four times in 24 outings (three starts) since his £350,000 switch from Kidderminster in January 2014.

Powell, who was in the final stages of his appointment as manager, intervened to put the brakes on Scannell’s potential move to Millwall during this season’s first transfer window.

The 24-year-old, who cost £800,000 from Crystal Palace during the 2012 close-season, has since signed a new contract through to 2017, with a further year’s option in the club’s favour.

Sean has had an unbelievable season,” said Powell.

“He is a right winger by trade, but he can also be very dangerous on the left, as he showed on Saturday.

“To bring Joe on, I either had to take Sean off or switch him, and I chose the latter because I wanted to keep him on the pitch.

“I guess working out a way to use both Sean and Joe gives me a dilemma, but it’s a nice one to have.”
