Mark Robins revealed Huddersfield Town are seriously looking at offering trialist striker Cristian Lopez a deal.

The 24-year-old from Atletico Baleares followed up his encouraging cameo against Real Betis with a goal and more eye-catching play in the 3-2 defeat at Oldham, when he replaced James Vaughan (knocked out) after only 19 minutes at Boundary Park.

“His performance on Saturday proved that what we saw against Betis wasn’t a one-off, he was prepared to put in a shift and he showed that he’s got some quality,” said manager Robins, whose side open their Championship season at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

“He performed well and lasted well and showed he has got the capability with a positive performance – and a well-taken goal – but he does need a pre-season because he hasn’t done one; he needs a little bit of work which will take a little bit of time. But he is an interesting player, no doubt about that, and he’s done his chances no harm whatsoever.

“Hopefully we can keep him a little bit longer and then we’ll have a decision to make. If we can do something it will have to revolve around a conversation between myself, Dean Hoyle, Nigel Clibbens and Ross Wilson, and we will also have to talk to Cristian and his agent, but we will see where we go with it.”

Robins is hoping to further add to his squad before the big kick-off, too, and has the backing of chairman Hoyle (see main paper). Robins said: “Nothing has happened yet because we haven’t got pen on paper, but we will keep working on it,” said the boss.

“I would still like a body or two in before next weekend and we will work on it, but the focus now shifts to getting the players we have ready for a tough opening fixture at Forest.”
