Mark Robins watched Huddersfield Town make tomorrow’s Capital One Cup second-round draw with a 2-1 derby win over Bradford and smiled: “I thought we were excellent.”

James Vaughan’s double put Town in the driving seat in front of 11,630 at the John Smith’s Stadium until last season’s beaten finalists pulled a last-gasp goal back through Nahki Wells.

“Our defending is clearly something we must improve, but I’m pleased because I thought we were brilliant in spells.

“We grew into the game and the first goal came at the right time for us (42 minutes) because the fans we getting a little bit impatient.

“We were a little bit sloppy in the final third again but Vaughny produced two great finishes and Adam Clayton really made us tick.

“But to be fair, I was pleased with everyone, because they all put a shift in and passed the ball and moved pretty well.”

Robins handed a second Town debut from the bench to striker Jon Stead, fit again after a groin problem which interrupted his pre-season.

And there was also an outing for centre-back Anthony Gerrard after his calf injury in a new-look 3-5-2 formation.

“We only really worked in that system the day before, so it’s testament to the players that they took to it so well,” added Robins.

“It’s a fluid system and it’s about us getting on the ball and doing what I want us to do.”

Robins revealed right-back Jack Hunt was replaced by Adam Hammill at half-time because of a tight hamstring.
