Huddersfield Town Mark Robins says he’s happy with the defensive options provided by Tommy Smith and Murray Wallace as Town prepare to tackle Championship leaders Burnley.

Smith, 21, made his league debut in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday while Wallace, 20, was on the bench. And boss Robins hailed the contribution of Ex-Manchester City player Smith while also praising the attitude of Scotland Under 21 Wallace.

Smith went in for injured centre-back Peter Clarke to feature alongside Anthony Gerrard and Joel Lynch as Robins reverted to a 3-5-2 formation. Robins said: “I was delighted with Tommy’s performance, He delivered exactly what I expected him to.

“He has been coming along nicely in our development team, and I had no qualms about putting him into the first team.

“It wasn’t the busiest game he will ever have, but he was up against tricky strikers in Matty Fryatt and Connor Wickham and did a great job in negating the threat of their winger Jeremy Helan.”

Smith arrived at Town the close-season before last primarily as a right-back, but Robins used him at centre-back during pre-season.

Robins added: “Tommy is a defender, and a versatile one at that. He can play right-back, but we used him in the middle in the Capital One Cup game at Hull and he coped very well.

“It’s good to have different options, because we will set up differently depending on the game, and Murray gives us similar flexibility on the left.”

Eddie Ilderton, from Tyne and Wear, will referee Saturday’s game, his 14th of the season.
