While the clamouring begins among Huddersfield Town fan for news on potential signings, the club's supporters will equally hold a sense of fear towards any potential departures.

Danny Ward aside, the assemblage of players let go this summer hardly made for any uproar as the fringe members of the squad, alongside ageing individuals, were allowed to move on to pastures new.

What will be of most concern to Town fans is the apparently perpetual rumours linking Adam Clayton with a move away from the John Smith's Stadium.

The latest clubs to reportedly target Town's talismanic midfielder are newly relegated Premier League duo Norwich City and Cardiff City, who will both be boosted by the parachute payments that run in tandem with their demotion.

The Canaries and the Bluebirds, who have allegedly lodged a bid for Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban, are armed with the level of funds that could force Town into a decision should any offer arrive for one of their most prized assets.

It's certainly easy to see why Clayton is held in such high esteem by two clubs hoping to immediately bounce back to the highest tier, after a season in which he was crowned Player of the Year.

In the prolonged absence of James Vaughan and during Nahki Wells' bedding-in period, Clayton was the leading light for Town and it seemed fitting that his goal would be the one to ensure their survival in the 2-1 win at Yeovil.

Schooled at Manchester City, it has been no surprise to see Clayton fit so seamlessly into Mark Robins' pass-and-move style at Town and the fact only Adam Hammill and Oliver Norwood registered more assists than the Terriers' creator-in-chief is testament to his ability to pick the right pass.

His goal haul also showed noticeable improvement from his debut season at the club, having scored seven goals last term domestically -  the joint-third highest in the squad - compared to four in 2012/2013, while his overall output across both goals and assists is also only bettered by two players.

To pick faults in Clayton is a largely futile task, with the midfielder offering Town a take on the archetypal modern-day playmaker; a combination of passing accuracy, vision, poise and control in charge of the ball as well as good speed across the ground.

Having finished as one of Town's most potent threats in the final third, Clayton also brings with him a precious commodity in being able to grab goals from midfield.

The celebration of more fleet-footed, nimble technicians is all very well, but the long-range screamers which have come to embellish Clayton's more robust style of play are also worth their weight in gold.

It is his robustness, however, which acts as something of a minor downfall for the 25-year-old. His aggression led to eight yellow cards during 2013/2014.

Clayton will also wish to add to his numbers in the goal and assist departments, but it appears his form has already done enough to form a lengthy line of suitors.

It speaks volumes of the midfielder's progress that Brighton and Hove Albion - a side based on 'tiki taka' principles - came in for him in January and the Seagulls will have similar promotion aspirations to Norwich and Cardiff next year.

In the simplest terms, the Championship's top brass appear to view Clayton as the type of player who can make a tangible impact on any promotion bid.

Town's biggest problem could be convincing Clayton to commit his long-term future to the club and, with his contract only having one year left to run, a sizeable bid could change the outlook but if Town and Robins are serious about their hopes to push for the play-offs, then they may feel they cannot cave.

The club showed an admirable resolve in January to fend off the Seagulls' advances and they must show a similar steely edge to keep hold of such a key player. It could turn out to be the best business Town do this summer.
