An appreciation society has been launched –  to celebrate Adam Clayton’s beard.

The Adam Clayton Beard Appreciation Society has sprouted in growth since it was launched on Facebook last Sunday, and now sports over 500 fans.

The mystery founders of the group said that they created the page to pay homage to his hirsute appearance after Huddersfield Town’s win against Wigan last Saturday.

The midfielder sported a more clean shaven look when he joined the team in July, 2012, but his recent facial follicle choice has earned his beard the right to have a fan club all of its own.

A total of 104 beard enthusiasts joined the light-hearted page in the first 24 hours to show their pride in their hairy hero.

Since then more than 100 people a day have ‘liked’ it, a response which those behind it have called ‘unbelievable’.

So far 11 pictures have been uploaded on to the site, detailing the beard’s progress from its infancy to its big and bushy size in the last few months.

The facial hair fans have even created a funny image ‘meme’, showing Batman slapping an enemy after suggesting that he should shave it off.

Commenting on the reasons behind the page in a post, its creators said: “Following Adam’s winner against Wigan on 8/2/14, this page was started to pay homage to his pogonotrophic efforts.”

They took to the site just one day later to thank those who ‘liked’ the page for their help in ‘spreading the love of the bearded one and HTFC’.

Huddersfield Town fans commented on the beard’s progress on the Down at the Mac board last November, where they said its quality

matched his performance.

A spokesman from Huddersfield Town FC confirmed that Adam was aware of the positive reception his beard has had and his intention to put it to good use for charity.

He said: “Adam is aware of the popularity of his beard and has already come to us to see if he can use it to raise some money for the foundation.”

Hull City midfielder Tom Huddlestone did something similar, when he had his famous lock of hair, cut off to mark his first goal for thirty-two months. His hair was sold for £6,300 on internet auctioning website eBay.

The item – listed with the caption “Fluffy. One previous owner” – attracted 114 unique bids and was sold for £6,300.
