Wigan sack Gary Caldwell

Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell celebrates League One title success last season

The Latics have parted ways with their manager today after just two wins in 14 matches this season.

A statement on the club website reads:

The club reluctantly wish to announce that we have parted company with manager Gary Caldwell, with immediate effect.
With the club in 23rd place in the Sky Bet Championship, after recording just two wins in 14 games this season, the decision was made today to make a change.
Chairman David Sharpe said: “It’s undoubtedly the toughest decision I’ve had to make since becoming Chairman.
“We deservedly won the League One title last season. However, we have not managed to carry on that momentum into this season and, after careful consideration over a period of time, I feel that we need to act now in the best long term interests of the club.
“We thank Gary for all the hard work he has put in and wish him all the best for the future.
“We need to identify a new manager who can have an immediate impact and deliver success in the long term.”
Gary Caldwell was appointed manager in April 2015 after signing as a player for the club in January 2010. He played 111 times for Latics, captaining the side to two survivals in the Barclays Premier League, and was club captain for the FA Cup victory in 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson backs Scotland to beat England

Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Gordon Strachan’s side will beat England at Wembley next month.

The Auld Enemies have been drawn in the same qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup and the Scots need a win to get their campaign back on track.

The former United boss said:

I think they have to win it, but that’s not a problem. They can win it.

If you go back to the European Championship a few years ago, they went down there and were very, very unlucky. In the last minute I think it was (Christian) Dailly who had the header that was saved by (David) Seaman. They’ll do well Scotland, they will be fine.

Scotland always do well against England.

It’s always a great incentive, the underdog. And the support will be fantastic, whatever they allocate Scotland it will be treble that. They will find tickets somewhere.

I remember back in ‘76 when they tore down the goalposts and I think the English football president said they were banning Scottish fans forever. Two years later there were only 80,000 of them. So they will not stop the Scotland fans getting in.

Wolves statement

Here’s what the club has had to say following the departure of Walter Zenga.

Wolves have announced that Walter Zenga’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect.

Stefano Cusin, Assistant Head Coach, has also left the Club.

Wolves will be conducting a thorough process to recruit a new Head Coach and won’t be revealing any timescales associated with this important task.

Rob Edwards, First Team Coach, has been placed in interim charge of the first team, supported by Under 23s Coach, Scott Sellars.

The Club would like to extend their thanks and best wishes to Walter and Stefano for their contribution to Wolves during the season so far.

Wolves will be making no further comment at this stage.

Pretty much nothing then.

Still no confirmation

No confirmation of Zenga’s dismissal by Wolves yet, but the man he replaced - Kenny Jackett - has just made a signing for new club Rotherham.

Former Stoke and West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie has signed on the dotted line for the Millers.

And he didn’t have to wait around outside the New York Stadium...

Watford investigation

Watford FC have launched an investigation after the Daily Telegraph claimed they had provided false financial documents to the Football League in 2014.
