Derby County have been reliving one of the most celebrated wins in their history this week.

It’s 40 years since the mighty Real Madrid were dismantled in a European Cup second round first leg tie.

The Spanish giants were seen off 4-1 by Dave Mackay’s men in front of 34,839 at the Baseball Ground.

Former Arsenal star Charlie George scored a hat trick.

But how were Huddersfield Town faring back in October 1975?

While Derby had won the title the previous season (in those days, the European Cup was for champions only), Town were relegated to the Fourth Division (now League II).

Just five years previously, Leeds Road had been staging top-flight football.

Indeed in November 1971, Town were 2-1 home winners over a Brian Clough-bossed Derby side who were to win the first of the club’s two championships in four seasons.

Town, who had never been out of the top two divisions, finished bottom of the table and suffered the first of three relegations in those same four campaigns.

Bobby Collins was the man at the helm as Town tried to adapt to their new surroundings.

They had visited Derby in the second round of the League Cup, losing 2-1.

The night before the Rams beat Real, Town lost 3-2 at home to Torquay United in front of 5,777.

Goals by Rod Belfitt and Colin Garwood couldn’t stave off a second defeat of the season which left Collins’ side fifth.

That’s where they finished the season, missing out on promotion by two points (Lincoln City, Northampton Town, Reading and Tranmere Rovers went up).

Derby were beaten 5-1 by Real in the second leg at the Bernabeu, so losing 6-5 on aggregate.

They finished fourth in the old First Division, behind champions Liverpool, QPR and Manchester United.

Liverpool lifted the UEFA Cup, Southampton the FA Cup and Manchester City the League Cup.
