Disappointed boss Chris Powell has told his Huddersfield Town players plans for the Championship campaign must be "nailed down and got up to speed" in the remaining three friendlies.

Powell watched National League Grimsby end Town's unbeaten warm-up run 3-1 at Blundell Park and provide a few questions to be answered in the upcoming matches against Rochdale, Deportivo De La Coruna and Barnsley.

Tommy Smith scored for Town after Nathan Arnold, Danny East and Omar Bogle fired Paul Hurst's side impressively ahead.

"We were up against a side who really got to grips with the game early, never let us settle and unsettled us," admitted Powell, who was without a Jason Davidson because he has returned to Australia for the birth of his first child.

"After the exertions of Spain, I think we could maybe have done with playing the game a day later but no excuses, Grimsby wanted to put down a marker against a higher side and they certainly did that.

"It was good experience for some of our younger players, who now need to show how they can come back from this, and while it was disappointing all round and for our fans, the only thing that counts is that first kick of the season proper and what happens after that.

"I want to win and never like the feeling of losing, so while there were one or two aspects I liked, there were not enough and we need to nail things down and get ourselves up to speed in the next three games."

Strikers James Vaughan and Ishmael Miller are doing conditioning work in their comebacks from injury, as is midfielder Phil Billing, while Jonathan Hogg has been training and could figure at Rochdale on Saturday.
