Huddersfield Town have signed Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer on loan until Boxing Day.

The 23-year-old England age-group stopper played 10 matches in his previous loan at the John Smith’s and will go straight into the team to face Middlesbrough.

Town boss David Wagner has acted quickly before today’s 5pm loan deadline because of a left-ankle injury to No1 Joe Murphy.

Steer’s return can be for only one month, however, because regulations prevent separate loans for longer than a total of three months to one club – and he’s already had two months at PPG Canalside.

So the Boxing Day visit of Preston North End to the John Smith’s Stadium will be the last of a potential six extra appearances for the club.

Regular back-up Lloyd Allinson has yet to figure at first-team level, so the move for Steer – who has featured in all three of Town’s league wins so far – was a logical step, as he is down the pecking order at Villa Park behind the likes of Brad Guzan and Mark Bunn.

New Villa boss Remi Garde agreed to the loan because he wants Steer – who started his career at hometown Norwich and has had previous loans at Yeovil, Cambridge and Doncaster – to gain first-team experience at the highest possible level.

Steer knows the Town environment well, so even under a different manager and training regime – it make sense for him to return.

Wagner is already forced into at least two outfield changes, with Harry Bunn serving a one-match ban against Aitor Karanka’s third-placed raiders and Muzzy Carayol unavailable against his parent club.
