Media reports suggest Huddersfield Town may be readying a move for free agent Markus Holgersson after his release from Wigan Athletic.

The Swedish international would bring experience and solidity to a backline deprived of Peter Clarke from last season's first-team squad, after the central defender was let go by Town.

As any move would only cost Town in wages, with no transfer fee involved, it could potentially represent some shrewd business for the club should Mark Robins make a play for the centre back.

Here's all you need to know about the possible transfer target.

1. Holgersson began his career in his native Sweden, playing first team football in Division Three with Hoganas BK (2004) and with Division Two side Angelholms FF (2005-2008).

2. In 2009, the 29-year-old returned to Helsingborgs, where he stayed until 2011, playing 80 times in the league and scoring five goals.

3. During the 2010-2011 season he helped the 'Di Roe' to an historic Swedish treble, encompassing the league, the cup and the country's super cup in what was to be something of a final swansong for the defender.

4. Joined New York Red Bulls from Helsingborgs in January 2012 and made more appearances (31) and scored more goals (3) than any other defender at the club until the end of the US season.

5. Holgersson followed that up by making 32 appearances for the Red Bulls in 2013 as the club went on to win an inaugural Supporters' Shield.

6. Upon his arrival at the Red Bull Arena, Holgersson was forced to switch from his preferred position of right-back to a central defensive position, where he carved out a reputation for himself as a versatile player.

7. He celebrated his move by receiving his first and only international call up to date in the same month that he joined the Red Bulls, earning his first Sweden cap in a 5-0 victory against Qatar.

8. During his first season in the US, Holgersson was crowned Defender of the Year for the Red Bulls.

9. Due to the MLS outfit's salary cap, however, Holgersson had his New York Red Bulls contract terminated at the turn of 2014 as the club looked to trim their excessive wage bill.

10. The experienced defender signed for Wigan in February but endured a rather miserable three-month stay at the DW Stadium, making just one substitute appearance in the 4-3 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on the final day of the 2013/2014 Championship season.
