Tareiq Holmes-Dennis has put pen to paper on a three-year-deal with Huddersfield Town.

The 20-year-old left-back from Charlton Athletic joins for an undisclosed fee, but I understand the deal could cost Town around £500,000 (with add-ons to their initial downpayment).

Highly-rated by head coach David Wagner, Town also have the option of adding a further year to the contract .

That’s because 5ft 9in Holmes-Dennis, who has had loan spells at Oxford, Plymouth and Oldham Athletic and will be Town’s No12, is seen as a player for the future in addition to immediately putting pressure on Chris Lowe for the left-back berth.

Wagner said: “Tareiq is very energetic player.

“He is a very modern full-back who likes to attack and I believe his attributes will suit our system very well.

“He also has big space for development in the future because he is a good age, so this is very exciting.

“I’m looking forward to working with him on the training pitch.”

Holmes-Dennis is well-known to Town first-team coach Andy Hughes as they were both at The Valley at the same time.

Having allowed Jason Davidson out on loan to FC Groningen, Town have the likes of Martin Cranie and Jon Gorenc Stankovic as possible back-up in the No3 slot, but Town have been keen to add a young, talented left-back.

“I’m very happy we have managed to bring Tareiq to the club during this summer window,” added Wagner, preparing his side to host Wolves on Saturday.

“We always look at the domestic market first and as he’s a great young British talent.

“Given that Jason Davidson left to FC Groningen, we were targeting another left-back to add to the first-team squad.

“However, we would only do something now if the right player became available.

“Our Head of Football Operations, Stuart Webber, has been watching Tareiq for over five years and knows his talent well.

“Equally, Andrew Hughes played with him at Charlton and knows he is a good character too.”

Holmes-Dennis, a former England Under 18 cap who came through the Charlton academy, was under contract until 2018 at The Valley, but Town were keen to add him to their roster as transfer deadline day is just a week away.

Lowe, of course, scored his first Town goal in the 2-1 derby win against Barnsley which took Town top of the Championship for the first time since December 1999.

Holmes-Dennis has made two substitute appearances for Charlton this season, one at Cheltenham in the EFL Cup and the other in last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Walsall in League One.
