Huddersfield Town are in talks with out-of-contract Coventry keeper Joe Murphy.

The 32-year-old Republic of Ireland international is due in Huddersfield today for discussions with boss Mark Robins, his former boss at the Sky Blues.

Having released Ian Bennett, who could yet return in a coaching capacity, Town are keen to provide competition for Alex Smithies, and see Murphy as a good fit for the club.

Robins is also eyeing a move for Blackpool’s out-of-contract Northern Ireland centre-back Craig Cathcart.

And former Blackpool coach Steve Thompson is being tipped to become the manager’s right-hand man.

Dublin born, Murphy has also played for Tranmere, West Brom, Sunderland and Scunthorpe.

Murphy played in the 2000 League Cup final for Tranmere, one of 75 appearances for the Birkenhead side

He featured six times for West Brom, where he moved in 2002 and who loaned him to Walsall before a 2005 transfer to Sunderland.

Murphy had another loan stint at Walsall before joining Scunthorpe in 2006.

He made 227 appearances for the Iron, helping them win promotion from League I in 2007 and 2009.

The move to Coventry came in 2011, and he has played 156 games for them.

He was with West Brom when given his first Republic cap as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw against Turkey at Lansdowne Road in September 2003.

And he was a Scunthorpe player when handed his second, again from the bench, in the 3-0 win against Algeria at Dublin’s RDS Arena in May 2010.

League I Coventry are keen to keep Murphy, but the player looks certain to move.

Town academy product Smithies, 24, was an ever-present this season.

Lloyd Allinson, aged 20 and yet to make a first-team appearance, provided back-up for Smithies and Bennett last season.

Town have offered 19-year-old development keeper Ed Wilczynski a new deal.
