Chris Powell says he’s ready to carry on building his squad as Huddersfield Town continue their preparations for the Championship campaign at their Spanish training base.

The manager has welcomed new arrival Kyle Dempsey to the squad in Marbella after he completed his move from Carlisle United late last week.

That’s after Dempsey’s fellow midfielder Dean Whitehead and left-back Jason Davidson featured in Saturday’s friendly win at Guiseley.

So did trialist Martin Cranie, the former Barnsley centre-back and skipper who has also gone to Spain.

“As a squad, we are still light in numbers, and the defence is one of the areas I need to address,” said Powell, who is also being linked with Manchester City striker Jordy Hiwula.

Martin Cranie is a good player at this level with plenty of knowhow,” said Powell, who will not pursue interest in former QPR keeper Brian Murphy.

“He’s left Barnsley for reasons relating to his contract, not his performances.

“He trained with us for a couple of days last week, then played at Guiseley, and he is still with us, so we’ll see what develops.”

Powell says he is happy with his signings so far, but will continue to seek new additions.

“We still need one or two who I feel will add to the players we already have and push us on that bit more,” he explained.

Celtic and Leeds United are the latest clubs being linked with former England junior star Hiwula.

Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers are among other clubs believed to be keen on the 20-year-old.

Hiwula made his mark during a loan spell at Walsall last season, notching nine goals in 20 games for the League I side.
