Huddersfield Town are being linked with a move for Southampton striker Sam Gallagher, who is being made available for loan for 2015/16.

But Town will face stern competition if they do pursue a deal for the 19-year-old, because a whole host of Championship clubs are also keeping tabs on a player whose 2014/15 season was hampered by injury.

Gallagher broke into the first-team setup at St Mary's in 2013/14 under former manager Mauricio Pochettino as he made 20 appearances and scored twice in all competitions but was on the fringes last season under Ronald Koeman.

And, with the Saints drafting in Malaga striker Juanmi to compete with Graziano Pelle, Shane Long and the fit-again Jay Rodriguez for a striking berth, Gallagher's chances of establishing himself this season appear slim.

Town's former head of football operations Ross Wilson moved to Southampton earlier this year to take up a Director of Scouting & Recruitment role and the Scot could yet lend Town a helping hand if they choose to make their move for the former Plymouth Argyle academy graduate.

It is understood that a number of Championship sides enquired about his availability last season and he has a long line of admirers from the second tier, with Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Brighton and Hove Albion, Cardiff City, Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves all having an interest in him.

Gallagher, who tragically lost his father at the start of 2014, scored a stunning winning goal to clinch the Premier League U21 Cup for Southampton last season with a 2-1 extra-time win and his strike was voted the Premier League academy goal of the season.
