Huddersfield Town’s Under 21 side’s winning streak came to an end after a late Crewe equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

Frankie Bunn’s men and their 14-game winning streak dated all the way back to September 7 when they beat Crystal Palace 3-2, but Jake Charles’ goal was cancelled out by James Baillie.

The second half started in the best possible way for Town but ended in the worst possible fashion.

The young Terriers scored within the first minute of the second half, but they could have lost the game in the dying moments as Charlie Kirk hit a post in the final minute following Baillie’s leveller.

They were also dealt a blow as Philip Billing limped off in stoppage time following a rash challenge on him by Perry Ng.

Town had the majority of the possession in the first period but struggled to find the killer ball in the final third and were wasteful with chances which they rued.

The two best chances of the first half fell to strikers Charles and Pyke.

Pyke linked up with Charles in the area to allow the Welsh Under 21 international to touch it onto his favoured left foot, but his low curling effort went just wide of the post.

His strike partner Pyke had a good opportunity before half time as he was put through by Coughlan, but his right-foot strike was well saved by Richards.

Crewe never really troubled Town and only had a long distance effort to show which was comfortable for Tadhg Ryan.

Town’s fortunes changed in the second half and It didn’t take them long to break the deadlock as they scored moments after the whistle was blown for the start of the half.

Pyke capitalised on a Crewe mistake at the edge of their area and he fed the ball into Charles, who made no mistake with a cool left-foot finish past Richards.

Huddersfield looked the better team up until after the hour mark but Crewe battled and forced their way back into the game.

Chances from Booty, Billing and Pyke were wasted at a time when Town were desperate to double their lead for a two-goal cushion.

Crewe pushed both of their wing backs up the field and the gamble paid off as the right sided wing back, Baillie, stabbed home a first-time right-foot finish in the 85th minute after they worked their way into the box.

Things nearly went from bad to worse for the Terriers after some sloppy play from Town allowed Kirk to strike from the edge of the area.

His shot beat the keeper but struck the woodwork and was eventually cleared.

Bunn’s men pushed on in added time in an attempt to salvage their winning streak but it came to no avail.

Town remain top of the Under 21 Professional Development League Two and take on Southampton on January 25 in the Premier League Cup.
