Huddersfield Town's Under 21s team continued their march at the top of Professional Development League II North with a 2-0 derby win over Leeds at United’s Thorp Arch training base.

Cristian Lopez and Sean Scannell scored as Steve Eyre’s side, unbeaten in the league, made it 11 wins from 12 games.

Town, who handed a club debut to Norwegian signing Sondre Tronstad, had the bulk of the chances, but it took them until the 74th minute to open the scoring through Spanish striker Lopez.

Scannell, a late substitute in Saturday’s 2-1 Championship win at Birmingham, netted a second late on.

Duane Holmes had the first chance of the contest, but fired wide after going through on goal in the 15th minute.

Tronstad, who moved from hometown club IK Start last month, started a neat move on the half hour, playing in striker Harry Bunn, whose shot flew wide with Lopez inches away from turning the ball in.

Bunn, signed from Manchester City last month, fired just wide again moments later before Leeds had their first opportunity, with midfielder Chris Dawson forcing Town keeper Lloyd Allinson into a full-length diving save.

Midfielder Tronstad launched another attack with seven minutes of the first half remaining, setting up Joe Lolley.

The January transfer window capture from Kidderminster crossed, and Lopez tumbled in the area, but the penalty appeals were waved away.

Allinson was back in the action at the start of the second half, making a one-on-one save to thwart Gboly Ariyibi.

Town hit back, and Holmes was unlucky to see his dipping effort go just wide.

Bunn was back in the action soon after, but Leeds ‘keeper Alex Cairns did well to push away his header from Scannell’s corner.

Town were starting to turn the screw and Lolley fired over after creating space with neat footwork.

The pressure was finally made to count as Matt Crooks – once again playing at centre-back rather than in midfield – broke up a Leeds attack and passed to Lolley, who in turn found Jordan Sinnott.

The Under 21 skipper’s shot was spilled by Cairns, allowing Lopez to pounce and fire home.

Eyre’s side retained the ball well in the final stages as Leeds went a little more direct in search of an equaliser.

That gave Town space to exploit, and having spurned a great chance after substitute Jake Charles sent him clear, Scannell counted as he weaved his way to the edge of the area before shooting in.

Town: Allinson, Carroll, Wallace, Crooks, Sinnott, Scannell, Tronstad, Holmes, Lolley (Charles, 85mins); Bunn, Lopez (Atkinson, 89mins). Unused subs: Wilczynski, Wright.

Town are next in action at home to Nottingham Forest at PPG Canalside on Monday afternoon (1.00).
