Huddersfield Town are unlikely to launch a bid for Watford midfielder Lewis McGugan.

And potential loan target Diego Poyet says he wants to fight for a place at West Ham United.

The £2m transfer of Conor Coady to Wolves has put Town’s midfield strength in the spotlight, even though Chris Powell has recruited former Middlesbrough man Dean Whitehead.

It’s been suggested £500,000-rated McGugan, who could be surplus to requirements at Vicarage Road after Watford’s promotion to the Premier League, is in Town’s sights.

But under the club’s financial blueprint, the combination of fee and wage demands for established Championship players like McGugan make such deals difficult to clinch.

Poyet, who played under Powell at Charlton Athletic, had an unspectacular loan stint at Town last season, playing only twice, but the boss remains a big fan of the 20-year-old.

However the Spanish-born player, signed by West Ham a year ago, has said he wants to make his mark under new manager Slaven Bilic.

The son of former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet played the full 90 minutes of the Hammers’ Europa League qualifying clash with Lusitanos last Thursday.
