Candid Huddersfield Town keeper Alex Smithies admitted making a mistake which allowed Watford to take the points from this entertaining game.

Smithies, a hero with several good saves at Middlesbrough last week, apologised to team-mates after dropping Lewis McGugan’s free-kick.

Daniel Purdil smashed in the rebound and Smithies said: “I just spilled the free-kick. There was nothing more to it than that.

“It’s part of life as a goalkeeper. Other players can make mistakes elsewhere on the pitch and it may not lead to anything.

“But unfortunately I’ve made an error and it’s cost us. I’ve held my hands up and apologised to the team.”

Smithies made amends with a good stop late on to deny Watford star man Fernando Forestieri a goal with a cheeky chip.

The Town academy product said: “I tried after my mistake to make sure any other part I played in the game was positive.

“I was quite pleased with that save. Hopefully I can put things behind me now and move on to the next game.”

He thought Town were unlucky to lose and added: “We put a lot of balls into their box, created chances and perhaps on another day we might’ve won.

“We’ve given away two poor goals, but we’re definitely making progress. And we’ve still conceded fewer goals than games played.”
