HUDDERSFIELD Town were dumped out of the FA Cup by Wigan Athletic.

But what did you make of the performance?

Below are the ratings by Examiner sports editor Mel Booth.

On page two are the fans' ratings and reports.

ALEX SMITHIES
Had little chance with any of the goals and did well on a couple of other occasions to keep Wigan at bay. 6

CALUM WOODS
Pressed forward well to supply several decent crosses and also stood up well defensively in a testing examination. 7

JACK HUNT
Found it very tough going against McManaman, especially in the first half. Did much better in the second. 5

ANTHONY GERRARD
Unfortunate to get caught out before the fourth Wigan goal as Town tried to play out from the back. Solid otherwise. 6

PETER CLARKE
Great to see the skipper back in action after his lay-off suffering concussion. Very conscientious as always. 6

NEIL DANNS
Kept swapping flanks with Sean Scannell and put in a decent shift. Worked hard and did okay on the ball. 6

CHRIS ATKINSON
Given the opportunity to go and make Town tick, but it was very difficult as Wigan dominated possession. 5

ADAM CLAYTON
Looked as good as anyone, even when Wigan were on top. Put in some excellent challenges. Prompted well. 7

SEAN SCANNELL
Tried to make his pace an effective factor for Town but Wigan managed to get the measure of him. 6

ALAN LEE
Left to battle on his own for much of the first half. Headed a decent chance wide and taken off at the break. 6

SCOTT ARFIELD
Found it hard to make an impact in the first half with Town on the back foot. Did much better second half. 6

Substitutes:
Lee Novak (for Atkinson half time) 7,
James Vaughan (for Lee half time) 7,
Oliver Norwood (forScannell 65 mins) 6.

Fan reports

First half awful better with Vaughan and Novak up front but Hunt showed his defensive frailties and would never survive at PL level. Hope Robins gets them playing with the same urgency as Lillis did or else! Roger, Menston

We paid them too much respect in the first half. Players in wrong positions and inneffective. Better in the second half but naive at times. Tony, Overton

Any team which starts with AL up front on his own, has both SA & CA in the engine room & plays ND on the wing, cannot expect to compete. Our priorities lie elsewhere, but at least the subs meant we made more of a game of it after half time. Paul, Shipley

First half was like watching a Simon Grayson team. No idea or effort. Second half much improved. J Hunt had worst game in Town shirt and even though P Clarke is 100% effort he is not good enough at this level. Hope for better things tomorrow at Notts Forest. At least it's cheap to get in! TJ, Horbury

As a former season ticket holder now living in the south, I only see Town live a few times a year and (more often this year) on telly. Second best to Wigan's second team by a mile. Showed more bite and fight in second half, but a huge gulf between current Town team and premiership class. We need more pace and craft throughout the team and, if we're going to play good football, we need a much better pitch (despite rugby sharing, Wigan's pitch seems to cope better than ours). We need a midfield general asap and we need to move the ball forward more quickly when we are attacking (pacy passing, not just long ball). To make a better fist of it next year and beyond, we need our Academy to deliver players in this mould, so Chairman's model clearly right. Good luck Mark Robins - we need you to succeed. Paul H, Romford

This is the F.A Cup and Town needed to get right at them from the onset and not a late surge of urgency when it was already too late. Regardless of this, Wigan were a class or two above in almost every department with the quality of their finishing reflecting the scoreline. It was a difficult first game for any manager, but am sure MR will quickly learn from it and get them back up and running. Rob, Fartown

If we dont compete - we get beat - simple. Midfield needs to work harder in my opinion. David, Brighouse

Never really believed that there was a big gulf between the bottom of the Prem. and the Championship; till today! Martin, Outlane

Pity we have a game so close or MR might have started with the team from the seond 45 minutes. No complaints though Wigan were by far the better team so good luck to them in the next round. Dec, Meltham

Playing Lee up front on his own was asking for trouble and it duly arrived. As usual too many mistakes made. I hope these will be eradicated and that the second half is a better indicator of the performance to be produced next Tuesday. Philip, London

Poor performance, bit of fight needed in that team, no real vision till late on, a very inconsistent side. Colin, Lepton

Beaten by a better stronger side. Kev, Sowerby Bridge

Why can't the team give 100% like Peter Clarke. Atkinson was chasing shadows and lacked interest, Arfield made his first worthwhile tackle after 83 minutes. Clayton was better when pushing forward in the 2nd half and McManaman showed up Hunt's frailties in defending. Danns and Scannell were our only 2 midfielders in the first half who tried to get involved. David, Huddersfield

Poor tactics first half cost us any chance of a result, Alan Lee lone striker who in their right mind would try that. Gave Wigan far too much time and space enjoyed second half revival up to a point but damage already done.Time to concentrate very hard on league survival. Tony, Liversedge

Thought we set of with the wrong team in the wrong formation. We still may have lost but we gave them to much respect and space in the first 45. Rich, Meltham

We never got going until after their 3rd goal then gave them a bit more of a game. To get anything against Forest we need to repeat the 2nd half effort and cut out the mistakes James, Sheffield

Never deserved to get through on a half-hearted display. Very disappointing start for Robins. He certainly got the tactics wrong. No drive tempo or fight in the side, only for a brief spell in the second half after we scored. If Mr Hoyle does not bring in reinforcements for Robins, Town will be back in League 1. Stephen, Puerto Santiago

One or two bright moments but generally outclassed, out muscled and outplayed. Wasn't a priority game and it showed, just hope that the energy and drive will come back on Tuesday when it really matters. Food for thought and work to do Mark Robins, striker and backup for Scannell a must. Trojanhorse, Kirkburton

Absolutely poor defending and playing a 4,4,2 formation is not our best way of playing. Ian, Lowerhouses
