After their second-half slump at Leeds, Town are seeking some comfort and joy at home to Wigan.

While the Latics have yet to win a league game in Huddersfield (they made 10 visits between October 1978 and their most recent in April 2003) they were 4-1 fifth-round victors at the John Smith’s en route to last season’s FA Cup final success.

That game, on February 17, was Mark Robins’ first at the helm, and it would be a great time to show the progress which has been made under his management.

Some have pointed out that after 28 games, Town have only one more point than at the same stage last season.

But last Saturday and a couple of other games beside (I’m thinking Barnsley away and Birmingham at home) they have been competitive.

Of course it’s points that matter, and after a barren run in three successive away games, it’s important the first home Championship clash since Millwall were beaten 1-0 is marked with a victory.

While captain Peter Clarke is pushing hard for a recall, a return of some injured players like James Vaughan, Adam Hammill, Jonathan Hogg and Joel Lynch would be a huge boost.

All four have shown what they’re about, and there’s no doubt a fit and firing Vaughan will cause real problems for most defences in the division.

Hopefully Town have got on top of his knee injury, because a Vaughan-Nahki Wells partnership up top is exciting.

Hammill has been a key man this campaign, Hogg has a crucial contribution to make in midfield and Clarke and Lynch can add strength and experience at the back.

Wigan will prove a tough nut to crack, because they have become pretty resilient under Uwe Rosler.

After losing his first two matches at the helm, there has been only one defeat (3-0 at Doncaster last month) since the former Brentford boss got his teeth into the job at the DW Stadium.

He had a busy transfer window, letting Grant Holt go to Aston Villa but bringing in strikers Nicky Maynard (Cardiff) and Martyn Waghorn (Leicester) and midfielder Josh McEachran (Chelsea) on loan.

West Brom’s Craig Dawson remains a target, while another defender, Swedish international Markus Holgersson, has been signed after leaving New York Red Bulls.
