It's all eyes on Oldham tonight as Town wait to discover their destination in the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals.

Manchester City and Fulham fight it out at Boundary Park (7.00) for a place in the last eight and the right to host a Town Under 18 side who saw off Manchester United 2-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday.

Town, who have also beaten Luton and West Brom this time, last made the quarter-finals in 1974-75, winning 2-1 at Everton before going down 4-0 to Ipswich over two legs in the semis.

The season before, they reached the final for the only time to date, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Tottenham.

Both City and Fulham look more than capable of providing a tough test to the current crop of Town kids, with the former second in the Premier Academy League Northern division and the latter top of the Southern section.

City, who chalked up 13 straight wins before losing 5-2 at Bolton on Saturday, are coached by ex-Blackburn and Leeds winger Jason Wilcox and have a talented frontline duo in Thierry Ambrose and Jorge Intima.

It’s their third home tie in the Youth Cup, which they won in 1996 and 2008, their second triumph coming under the guidance of current Town senior development coach Steve Eyre.

Doncaster were beaten 3-0 in round three and Hereford 3-1 in round four, with both ties taking place at Hyde.

It’s believed the Etihad Stadium, scene of the Champions League clash with Barcelona last night, would be the venue for a meeting with Town, whose juniors are coached by Frankie Bunn, formerly on the City coaching staff, and Tony Carss.

Yorkshireman Steve Wigley, the one-time Aldershot and Southampton boss, is the man in charge of the young Fulham side, who have so far claimed away wins over Capital rivals QPR (4-1) and Spurs, when England U17 star Patrick Roberts hit a superb hat trick in a 3-2 success.

They are unbeaten in seven matches and have won five of those.

Town top the Professional Development League II North at both Under 21 and 18 level, and manager Mark Robins hailed the work being done at both age groups.

“We have to make sense of the academy and development systems and provide that pathway through to the first team, and a lot of good work is being put in,” he said.

“The Youth Cup is an extra, if you like, a gauge of where we are at, and the performance against United was excellent.

“It was a very good team effort, with significant performances from the likes of Phillip Billing, Jake Charles and Regan Booty, and all credit to Frankie Bunn, Tony Carss and the players.”

The Under 18s are in league action against Barnsley at PPG Canalside on Saturday (11.00).

The other three ties are: Charlton or Arsenal v Everton, Reading v Watford or Liverpool and Newcastle v Cardiff or Chelsea.
