Huddersfield Town are sweating over Calum Woods after the versatile full-back picked up a collarbone injury during the opening pre-season friendly at Chesterfield.

Manager Mark Robins is more concerned about the 26-year-old defender than Saturday’s 2-1 defeat in stifling heat at the Proact Stadium.

He fears Woods, signed as a right-back but a fixture on the left during the closing stages of last season, will be out for at least two weeks.

“We’ll have a better idea when the injury settles down, but it’s a worry,” said Robins, whose side lost to trialist Jamie Devitt’s 63rd-minute free-kick. Town old boy Gary Roberts gave Chesterfield a ninth-minute lead but Danny Ward levelled three minutes later.

Robins, whose team go to York tomorrow (7.45), played different sides in the first and second half, and fielded new faces Martin Paterson, Jake Carroll and Daniel Carr.

James Vaughan and Adam Hammill also figured but Jon Stead sat the game out after picking up a groin niggle during last week’s Spanish training camp.
Captain Peter Clarke was also absent as he returns to full fitness following a ‘tidy-up’ knee operation earlier in the close-season.

“We were okay without being sharp,” said Robins, who pointed to the after-effects of the Marbella trip, a Saturday morning work-out and the searing weather conditions.

“The players put in a lot of work in Spain, we spent Friday travelling back then trained again on the morning of the match, because the lads would only be getting 45 minutes maximum.

“At this stage, it’s all about fitness and building up that game time, and we still have work to do technically and tactically.

“We’ll be back at it this morning and I’ve no doubt the game at York will be another useful work-out for us.”
