Huddersfield Town defender Danny Kane has been named the Republic of Ireland’s Under 17 Player of the Year.

The academy scholar was present at the Football Association of Ireland’s annual awards evening in Dublin on Sunday.

Kane, who will be 18 next month, is primarily a centre-back, but has also played a right-back and as a holding midfielder.

He emerged at leading Dublin junior club Cherry Orchard before joining Town in February 2013.

Kane appeared as a substitute when Town Under 21s beat Swansea City 3-1 at PPG Canalside on Saturday.

Frankie Bunn’s side are back in Professional Development League action at Colchester United at Tuesday (2.00).

Sunderland’s John O’Shea took the Senior Player of the Year award.

Jeff Hendrick, of Town’s Championship rivals Derby County, was named Young International Player of the Year.

And Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish was crowned Under 21 Player of the Year.
