Huddersfield Town knew what they were getting when they invested £300,000 in the prodigious Joe Lolley from Kidderminster Harriers in January.

His direct approach, allied by his nimble footwork and swift change of direction, helped him display an on-field swagger all too often lacking from Town's play in the second half of the campaign and it permeates through to his assessment of his debut campaign in the blue and white stripes.

Put plainly, Lolley knows he possesses the weapons in his armoury to succeed at this level and was happy with his initial contribution.

"I think when I first came up I was quite confident and felt like I was doing well in training and when I was coming on [in matches]," he said.

A combination of factors then owed to a baptism of fire for the 21-year-old, who had to overcome a series of niggling injuries, which threatened to curtail his meteoric rise up the footballing pyramid.

"It's been a good experience but it's been tough at times," he added.

"I got a few injuries and they kept me out for quite a while and I didn't really trust my body.

"I didn't feel like I was playing as well, even in training, and I lost my confidence.

"Through those periods it was quite tough but to finish the season coming on against Leicester and then starting at Watford and doing well there lifted my spirits.

"I've shown to myself that I can do it at this level and also hopefully shown my team-mates and the staff that I am capable of coming in and performing in the Championship."

Ironically, due to his running style, Lolley inadvertently overloaded the pressure on his shins and was unable to string together a run in the first team during 2013/2014.

One other school of thought behind his injury lay-offs is the step up in training and competition from the Harriers to Town but Lolley is hoping he has overcome his fitness problems.

"I think one of the reasons for my injuries has been the intensity of training has stepped up a lot," he revealed.

"The amount of work I get through on a daily basis is a lot more than what is was even at Kidderminster.

"Even though it was full time there, I didn't work or run as hard as I have done at Huddersfield so it's taken its toll.

"But hopefully it's something I'm maybe not completely over but adjusted to a lot better and hopefully in pre-season I'll be ready and raring to go."

Lolley, like the rest of us this summer, will be kicking back and watching much of the World Cup action but his determination to prove himself in 2014/2015 will also consume much of his time in the close season.

The Redditch-born wideman must follow a meticulous pre-season training schedule ahead of the new season and admits it will be an active few months for him on the fitness front.

He added: "I've been in this week, I was in last week and I'm in next week too!

"I'll be in two or three days a week over the summer so I'm quite busy.

"I've got my own programme which I have to do on a weekly basis so I'll be keeping tabs on that.

"That's my plan for the summer really, it's not as exciting as I'd like it to be!"
