LEE CLARK will keep a close eye on James Berrett and Simon Eastwood in Town’s reserve clash with York at Emley today (2.00).

While the Galpharm second string still have a chance of totesport.com League East Division title honours, coach Paul Stephenson will field a young side.

Republic of Ireland Under 21 midfielder Berrett and England junior goalkeeper Eastwood will be the only senior squad members in action.

And Clark will monitor their performances as he begins preparations for Saturday’s League I visit to Walsall.

“They are both very good young players and are a big part of my long-term plans here,” explained Clark, who will pit his managerial skills against former Town player Chris Hutchings at Walsall.

“At this stage, their opportunities at first-team level have been limited by the players ahead of them in the queue, so it’s important they get game time in the reserves.

“But Tom Clarke has shown the value of remaining patient, and there’s no doubt their chance will come.”

The form of fellow teenager Alex Smithies means Eastwood has yet to make a first-team appearance, but he has been a regular on the bench since Matt Glennon underwent knee surgery.

Berrett, 20, has made nine starts and one appearance from the bench this season, and has been an unused sub for the last four games.

“The fact that they have both been in the 16 of late shows how highly I regard them,” added Clark.
