ROSS WILSON says Huddersfield Town’s “sensible” player contracts would not have left them desperate for cash even if they’d been relegated.

The club’s director of football operations has been busy scouting abroad with manager Mark Robins and will play a full part in putting together any deals on new signings.

Town have already re-signed promising midfielder Oscar Gobern for two years, with the club having an option to take his deal forward to 2016 as well, and there are bound to be new faces arriving with Robins needing to recruit a fresh forward line.

“This is a fantastic club with fantastic people and we want to keep building, building and building,” said Scotsman Wilson, who joined from Championship rivals Watford after starting his career at Falkirk.

“We don’t go shouting our mouths off, as everyone knows, but we want to keep moving forward and improving.

“The manager and players take all the credit for getting the job done last season and staying in the Championship gives us that stronger platform.

“This is the division we want to be in, we want to add to what we’ve already built here and staying in the Championship was pivotal to the plans we ideally wanted to implement.

“Relegation for a club like this would not have been a disaster because of the backing we get from the owner (Dean Hoyle) and the way we’ve structured our contracts – there will be no Wolverhampton Wanderers situation here – however Championship status is a big bonus going forward.”

Wilson says all the staff behind the scenes have played their part but believes Robins and the playing staff deserved to be lauded for ensuring safety.

“There is an incredible amount of effort behind the scenes which nobody sees, but they were rewarded with that outcome on the final day of the season,” he said, referring to the 2-2 draw against Barnsley which kept both clubs up a the expense of Peterborough.

“The jubilation was there for all to see from the directors’ box to the stands and I was delighted for everyone.

“To finish with 58 points would be excellent in any other season, yet in this one we had a real battle to stay up, but thankfully we got the right result and got the job done.”
