Chris Powell says another spell away from Huddersfield Town could be the key to unlocking Duane Holmes’ full potential.

The club have activated a one-year extension clause on the American-born midfielder’s contract.

Powell is excited by the 20-year-old’s ability, and gave him an extended run-out in his side’s opening friendly at Guiseley.

But midfield is a crowded department after the arrival of Dean Whitehead and Kyle Dempsey.

So academy product Holmes, who has already been at Yeovil Town and Bury, could be sent out for a third loan spell.

“Duane is a talent, without a doubt,” said Powell, who has yet to field him in a competitive game.

“He showed some skill, tenacity and neat passing at Guiseley, and he also claimed an assist.

“But we need to find a way of getting his qualities out of him on a consistent basis.

“It maybe that we send him out to add to his game experience.”

Holmes burst onto the first-team scene early in the 2013-14 season and made 19 Town appearances that term.

His sole outing last season came in the Capital One Cup second-round tie against Nottingham Forest.
