Huddersfield Town blew a two-goal lead as they crashed out of the FA Cup third round at the hands of Reading for the second season running.

A dramatic replay at the Madejski Stadium swung on the first-half dismissal of Jonathan Hogg, with Town leading through Jamie Paterson and Tommy Smith at the time.

Midfielder Hogg, also sent off in last season’s cup clash with the Royals, walked for a professional foul on Matej Vydra, and Brazilian Lucas Piazon, on loan from Chelsea, levelled with the resultant free-kick.

Then Vydra struck twice in four second-half minutes before completing a hat trick late on, with a stoppage-time strike from substitute Alex Fernandez meaning the hosts made their extra man count to seal a home fourth-round tie against Walsall.

Town made four changes from Saturday’s starting side against Fulham, with Joe Murphy retaining his place ahead of for Jed Steer.

There was a new look to the left side of defence, with Joel Lynch and Jason Davidson returning for Martin Cranie and James Husband.

Meanwhile Kyle Dempsey, who missed the Fulham game because of a knee injury, was picked ahead of Harry Bunn, who has an ankle problem.

Just as in the first tie, Reading had ex-Town midfielder as stand-in skipper in place of the injured Paul McShane.

Murphy was soon called upon, racing out of his area to head the ballaway as Piazon chased a ball over the top.

Town had an escape when a loose pass by Lynch allowed Reading to slicetheir way through, but the final shot was off target.

However the visitors went ahead with their first meaningful attack inthe eighth minute, with Nahki Wells picking out Paterson in the leftside of the area.

The on-loan Nottingham Forest man still had work to do, but showed his shooting prowess by squeezing the ball between keeper Ali Al-Habsi and the near post.

It was Paterson’s fifth Town goal and his third in as many meetings with Reading this season – and there was more excitement coming the away fans’ way.

The busy Wells was again involved in the build-up to the second goal, holding the ball up neatly and passing to Joe Lolley in the 15th minute.

The opportunity seemed to have passed when Emyr Huws headed against the bar, but Smith managed to drill the ball in off a post from a tight angle.

Wells looked like he was going to score himself in the 22nd minute when he went through one in one with Al-Habsi, but the former Wigan keeper smothered the ball.

And Town were made to rue the miss as first Hogg was red carded for a professional foul on Matej Vydra, then Piazon put away the resultant free-kick in the 29th minute.

Wagner had responded to the loss of Hogg by bringing on Dean Whitehead for Lolley, a first appearance in 10 games for the former Middlesbrough man after a knee injury.

Reading now had the momentum, and Town went 4-4-1, with Paterson playing on the left of midfield and Dempsey staying on the right.

It was tough going at times, but Town made it through to the break with their lead intact, but knowing they were going to have to call on their reserves of fitness.

Murphy did well to claw away Hal Robson-Kanu’s header from Andy Taylor’s cross soon after the restart.

And he made a fine save in the build-up to Reading’s 59th-minute equaliser, but couldn’t prevent Vydra hooking the ball home.

Reading were ahead within two minutes, with Czech Republic international Vydra turning in Ola John’s cross from the left.

Town weren’t about to give up, and Wells came agonisingly close when he lobbed against a post, with Al-Habsi saving the follow-up.

Murphy made another good save to thwart Vydra in the 69th minute, with Lynch blocking the follow-up from the same player.

Town made a double change in the 76th minute, when Cranie and Ishmael Miller replaced Dempsey and Whitehead.

However, there was to be no escape as Reading, for whom both Danny Williams and Chris Gunter came close, then added another as Vydra netted his third with a deflection off Cranie.

Fernandez gave the final score a cruel look when he whistled home a stoppage-time strike as Reading maintained their record of cup dominance over Town.

FC Halifax Town will face Chester in the third Round of the FA Trophy after a 1-0 victory at home against Barrow.

Shaun Tuton fired in the only goal of the game at The Shay.
