Huddersfield Town's Martin Paterson says he and teammate Adam Clayton have drawn a line under their training-ground bust-up – and are ready to carry on firing Town up the Championship.

Both featured for the first time since their altercation more than four weeks ago, and both scored in the 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday which put Mark Robins’ side 13th.

Next up are leaders Burnley at the John Smith’s Stadium in Saturday, and Paterson, whose goal was his first for Town and 50th in league football, is desperate to face his former club.

His early strike was set up by Clayton – and celebrated by Paterson, who had to have surgery on a hand injury, throwing a pretend punch at the midfielder!

Sheffield Wednesday (1) v Huddersfield Town (2) - Adam Clayton and Martin Paterson reference their training ground bust-up as they celebrate Paterson's goal

“I think we are both looking forward, not back,” said Northern Ireland international Paterson, 26, who made his ninth Town start and 12th appearance in all.

“Football is a competitive business, and as an individual, you have to be that way to succeed in the game.

“When there are a group of men training together day in, day out, it’s not always going to be nicey, nicey.

“We’re not playing tiddlywinks, passions can run high, and sometimes things spill over. The one positive was that we fell out over a footballing matter.

“I spoke to the manager and told him I was ready to keep working hard and to do what was needed to have a chance to get back into the team.

“Hopefully, the celebration showed there is no problem between myself and Adam. He is a great talent, it was a great pass for my goal, and it was great to see him get one as well.

“It was a great game for the pair of us, but the really important thing was the team winning the match, and we want to carry on winning matches.”

Former Leeds player Clayton, 24, said: “We’ve served our time, got our heads down and done the business. We are all buzzing to be fair.”

Robins added: “We had a situation that has been well documented.

“I do things in a way where people have to toe the line and they have to work and I had to make a really difficult decision (to leave the duo out). Now they have come back in and been outstanding.”
