David Wagner was quick to praise Nahki Wells after the striker bounced back from an early penalty miss to help Huddersfield Town claim a sweet 4-1 derby win at Leeds United.

The top scorer had an 11th-minute spot kick saved, and Leeds went ahead through Stuart Dallas before Town skipper Mark Hudson equalised in the 41st minute in front of a bumper 29,311 Elland Road crowd which included 2,082 Town fans.

Wells came to the fore in the second half, winning the corner from which Harry Bunn volleyed Town in front, setting up Karim Matmour’s first goal in English football, then driving in his 16th of the season.

Wagner’s side are up to 16th, eight points above the Championship drop zone, going into the international break and with eight games remaining, starting with the home match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday week, April 2.

Wagner said: “One of Nahki’s most important qualities is that he trusts in himself.

“We believe in him as well, and he knows that.

“Missing chances, and a penalty is a good chance, is part of the game.

“How he stayed focused and contributed the way he did was excellent.

“The goal he scored was not an easy finish either.

“I think this was a game he will speak of after is career is over.”

After seeing Town beat Leeds for the first time in five attempts, Wagner added: “This was a big win for us.

“We knew we had to be at our maximum and in the most part we were.

“Missing a penalty, then losing a goal - it wasn’t easy to stay focused, but the players managed it.

“We were clinical in the second half, something we always moan about not being, and we deserved the win.”
