You have to go back a while, but there was a time when England used Huddersfield Town players to take on Germany.

With the old rivals meeting again tonight, it’s worth remembering as many as four Terriers players have turned out for the Three Lions against Germany over the years.

And one former Town man has a 100% record against them – Ray Wilson.

Roy Goodall was in the England team in their first ever game against Germany.

It was a three-all thriller which took place in Berlin on October 10, 1930.

Alf Young and Ken Willingham were both in the squad that took on Germany in Berlin on May 14, 1958.

In 1954 Town’s Ron Staniforth featured in the first game between the two sides since the end of the Second World War.

Manchester United have sent more players to represent England against Germany than any other club. As many as 26 players to have taken on Germany with England over the years were playing for United at the time.

Among the 26 are England’s top two goalscorers – Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney.

Closely following Manchester United are Arsenal. The Gunners have sent 25 players to represent England against Germany.

Among those are the likes of David Seaman, David Platt and Tony Adams. Liverpool have sent the next highest number – 19.

They’re followed by Tottenham (18), Chelsea (13), Manchester City (12), Everton (11), West Ham (nine), Aston Villa (also nine) and Leeds (eight)

The friendly clash tonight will be the 30th between the two nations.

England are winning the rivalry on aggregate, 48 goals to 39.However, that’s largely down to the fact that England dominated in the early stages of the rivalry.

After the first draw in Berlin in 1930, England then went on a seven game winning streak over Germany, culminating in the 4-2 World Cup Final victory at Wembley.

That must have stirred something in the Germans though as they have dominated ever since.

England have won just five of the 21 matches that have followed that 1966 World Cup Final, while the Germany have won 14. That does include the 1990 and 1996 penalty wins though.

Overall then, England have beaten Germany 12 times, have lost to them 14 times and have drawn three times.

When it comes to the players, just four England greats to have played against Germany on at least three occasions have 100 per cent win ratios – including Wilson.

A strong, pacy left-back who broke into the Huddersfield team under Bill Shankly, Wilson won all three of his games for the Three Lions against Germany.

And only George Cohen, Jack Charlton and Sir Stanley Matthews can match his record.
