TOMMY MILLER savoured another three-point haul then admitted: “We’ve played better than that this season and only drawn.”

Town’s fourth win in five home League I games propelled them up to third in the table and kept the pressure on Miller’s old club Sheffield Wednesday, who beat Chesterfield 3-1, and leaders Charlton, who were held 1-1 at home to Tranmere.

“It was all a bit scrappy really, and there weren’t many phases of the match where we played the kind of football we like to, but there are some games when you have to just dig in, and we did that,” added the midfielder.

“Stevenage are a big, strong side, but we coped with them well.

“We had the lion’s share of the possession in first half without creating that many clear-cut chances or making their keeper make many saves until Gary Roberts scored.

“And when they got their equaliser. we stuck at it and showed a lot of character to force what turned out to be the winner from Lee Novak.

“Sure they had the late penalty miss, but overall I thought we deserved our win.”

Miller, 32, says he’s enjoying every minute of his time at Town and believes there is quality throughout the squad.

“You really have to be on your toes to keep your place,” explained the former Hartlepool, Ipswich, Sunderland and Wednesday man, who made his 10th start and 12th Town appearance in all.

“We have competition in all positions and we score goals from lots of areas, which is important.”

Town head to basement side Exeter on Saturday, and Miller is looking forward to the 273-mile trip to St James Park, Town’s longest on their league fixture list.

“We’ll get down there in plenty of time and prepare properly,” he said.

“We’ve gained some great results on the road since I’ve been here and without being complacent, I don’t think we need fear any side.”

Exeter, bossed by former Town loan midfielder Paul Tisdale, slumped to the foot of the table when they were beaten 2-0 at Bury on Saturday.
