Ian Bennett could return to Huddersfield Town as part of a new-look coaching set-up.

The 42-year-old keeper has just been released as a player after four seasons and 74 appearances.

But he is well under way with his coaching badges.

And he has held preliminary talks with Town, who recently parted company with goalkeeping coach Paul Crichton as well as first-team coach Steve Taylor and fitness specialist Darren Robinson.

Nick Colgan, currently academy goalkeeping coach, could take on the same role with the seniors, with Bennett stepping in to work with the Under 18s.

“The club and I have had a conversation,” confirmed the former Birmingham and Sheffield United man, who was an unused substitute for every match this season as Alex Smithies completed an ever-present record.

“We talked about possible future developments from both our points of view.

“There’s nothing concrete to report at this stage, but a coaching position is certainly something which would interest me.

“I wouldn’t rule out carrying on as a player somewhere, because I have looked after myself and I believe I have at least another season left in me.

“But I have to look at the long-term picture as well, and coaching is an area I would like to get into.”

Worksop-based Bennett came through the junior ranks at QPR.

He had a stint at Newcastle, where he was teammate of Lee Clark, the manager who brought him to Town, before making his break into the Football League with Peterborough.

He has also played for Leeds and had loan spells at Dagenham and Coventry and can boast 556 career appearances in total.

Smithies heads a crop of homegrown keepers at Town, with Lloyd Allinson, Ed Wilczynski and Sam Guthrie coming through the ranks.
