Joel Lynch has vowed to drive Nahki Wells towards his 20-goal target for the season.

As Town prepare to face Sheffield Wednesday, centre-back Lynch revealed he’s not afraid to “have a go” at his colleague if it inspires Wells to greater heights on the pitch.

Wells scored his 16th goal of the season in the 4-1 victory over Leeds United, but it was a rollercoaster game for the Town top scorer.

Wells had an early penalty saved at Elland Road but made one goal and scored one in the second-half demolition job.

Lynch said: “I had a go at Nahki during the game but, at the end, I said to him that I only ever do that because I want him to do better.

“He is a confidence player, but all strikers are confidence players. When they’re hot they’re hot.

“Sometimes Nahki gets a lot of criticism which is unfair. He does get a lot of chances the way we play, but he will always stick them away in the end.

“If you look at his goal record it’s right up there. I’m sure he’ll keep doing what he does.

“The Leeds game will have given him a big boost the way he played.”

Lynch added: “Strikers have to move on straight away and look for the next chance and not let it affect them.

“I always know Nahki is going to get his goals and he will score plenty more before the end of the season.”

Lynch, meanwhile, has spoken of his relief after avoiding a suspension.

The rugged centre-back had walked a tightrope on nine bookings, just one away from a two-match ban.

But the cut-off point has now passed and Lynch said: “I can carry on now. You can’t let it affect your game. I’ll just stay on my feet and try to defend as well as I can for the rest of the season.”

Lynch hailed the Leeds result which lifted the pressure after three defeats in four matches and said: “It was always going to be a tough game.

“It was a great result and we needed it. We know what we are capable of and we need to keep playing like this.

“We are not really thinking about it being a battle at the bottom. We just need to pick up as many points as we can and finish as high up as possible.”
