Huddersfield Town and Brighton were both on a high as they cancelled each other out at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday.

Home manager Chris Powell knew the Seagulls’ use of their full-backs Inigo Calderon and Adam Chicksen would pose particular problems to his team.

“Brighton play them really high up the pitch – it’s almost like having two wingers on each flank,” explained the boss, whose side moved up to 16th in the Championship.

It meant our wide players (Sean Scannell and Harry Bunn) had to be alert to that danger and track back to provide cover.

“I also wanted our full-backs (Tommy Smith and Jack Robinson) to do the same thing.

“So it was good to see Tommy overlap and pick out Jacob Butterfield for our goal.

Town took the lead in the 10th minute, only for Lewis Dunk to level in the 39th for Brighton, who are in 20th place.

The defender is now the Seagulls’ top scorer with four goals.

Sami Hyypia’s side are without a win in nine but Powell predicted: “They look a decent team, and I am sure they will get better and deal with the position they are in.

“Brighton are clever in what they do, they try to push you into areas you don’t want to be in.

“You have to do the hard yards to withstand that, and we showed concentration as well as energy, which was pleasing.”

Powell is optimistic on-loan Wigan striker Grant Holt will recover from a knock to the face and wideman Sean Scannell from a bout of cramp in time to face Ipswich in Suffolk on Saturday.

“Grant seemed to be in the wars from first minute to last,” said the manager.

“But he’s a bit of a warrior and I’m sure he’ll be okay.

“We took Sean off (in the 87th minute) as a precaution, and we’ll make sure he rests up.”

Ipswich lost for the first time in nine games when they went down 3-1 at Cardiff on Tuesday, when Derby’s 1-0 win at Blackpool put them top of the table.

Returning top scorer Daryl Murphy put Ipswich ahead before Peter Whittingham, Federico Macheda and Adam Le Fondre responded.

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy said: “It is disappointing.

“I thought in the first half we played very well; we scored a great goal, they scored a great goal.

“It was a pretty good first half from both teams and I was pleased with us. Where the second half came from I don’t know.

“If you make as many mistakes as we did in contriving to give them a goal then it’s going to be tough.

“We did it for their second and their third.

“I’m not going to take it away from Cardiff; I’m not here to talk about them and I’m not being derogatory to them.

“If we play badly they’ve got to pick it up and play well, but let me tell you that’s as bad as we’ve played this season.

“We gave two awful goals away. They should have been playing the circus music. It was just ridiculous.

“The first clearance (by Tyrone Mings), the second clearance (by Jonathan Parr), then it ends up being a shot, he (Macheda) sticks his leg out and it goes in.

“It was similar with the third one. That’s not like us at all. It was very comic cuts.

“We had an opportunity on Saturday (1-1 home draw with Blackburn) to put a game to bed with our chances and we didn’t. Cardiff did do it.”
