Dean Whitehead wants more big days in front of big crowds.

And he has urged fans to make Town’s “unbelievable” season ticket offer a sell-out 15,000.

Whitehead, 34, is looking forward to taking on Sheffield Wednesday at the John Smith’s on Saturday still revelling in the 4-1 derby day victory at Leeds.

He said: “That one was for the fans.

“The supporters were brilliant at Elland Road and out-sung Leeds on their own ground.

“I’m just glad we scored four goals, got the three points and allowed the fans to go out for a few beers.”

A season-high crowd of 29,311 turned out at Elland Road and Whitehead said big crowds helped inspire the team.

“As players we all want to play in front of big crowds. We showed that against Leeds. We have the players who can stand up and be counted,” he said.

“It makes a big difference.”

Town chairman Dean Hoyle has been stunned by the response of fans to his cut-price £179 season card offer for 2016-17.

Over 11,000 signed up in just four days and Town have extended the offer to 15,000.

Whitehead added: “It’s an unbelievable offer and one that’s almost unheard of in football.

“But that’s what the chairman is all about. I hope the fans buy into it and really get behind the boys next season.”

Sky Bet Championship - Derby County (2) v Huddersfield Town (0) - Dean Whitehead applauds the fans.

The Town squad are still adapting to the new style of football introduced by German head coach David Wagner but Whitehead says there are exciting times ahead.

“The foreign approach is different to the English approach, that’s for sure,” he said.

“David Wagner is passionate about his football. We like to press and give the forward players the freedom to express themselves and take players on.

“We play out from the back and can’t be afraid to lose the ball.

“When you play this way you have to play with big chest out and be brave on the ball.

“While some results haven’t gone for us we know that if we keep the performance level high, more often than not we will pick up the points.”
