Chris Powell will shun off-the-shelf training routines when Huddersfield Town return for pre-season on Wednesday.

Players have been following customised work-out schedules during their two months away from the club.

And that will continue after squad sessions get under way at Town’s PPG Canalside training complex on Wednesday.

“It’s about having a good balance in the build-up to a new season – it’s not like the old days of being slogged up and down hills and not seeing a ball for two weeks,” explained Powell, whose first pre-season as a professional was with Crystal Palace in 1988.

“It’s much more specific these days and we know we can train and tailor it to each player’s needs and to each unit.

“Midfielders, for instance, need to be the better runners because they are up and down in a game, whereas the big centre-halves don’t need to do that in the same way.

“You do need that core fitness work to see you through the season – that’s no different – but we adapt things to suit each player.

“There are various ways now where players can be helped with sports science and then we test them, of course, to make sure they are making the progress they need to.”
