Huddersfield Town chairman Dean Hoyle confirmed James Vaughan will not be sold this month and hopes he can fire the club towards a Championship play-off push alongside Martin Paterson and new hero Nahki Wells.

Wells, the Town record £1.3m signing from Bradford, who have a sizeable sell-on clause, grabbed a dramatic debut goal, and owner-chairman Hoyle said: “He is a quality, quality signing.

“He will link up well with Vaughan and Paterson. They are all out and out strikers who know how to put the ball in the back of the net, so we are absolutely delighted for the club and to have Nahki with us for four and a half years.”

On 12-goal Vaughan, who missed a fifth match with a knee injury, Hoyle added: “James will be in full training on Monday and he’s a fantastic striker who will not be leaving in this window.

“He may leave in the summer or next January, who knows, but we need to be getting strikers through the door.

“Nahki is not James’ replacement but we have to be realistic as well. With him and Paterson finding their shooting boots, it’s very exciting.

“It’s a lot of money to spend and we don’t do it lightly, but we make sure it’s on the right players.

We monitored him for 18 months and more importantly this club is the only one he wanted to come to, because he believes in what we are trying to do.

“With the way the club is progressing on the field, the football we play, the quality of players we have and Canalside, he believes it’s a great move for his career.”

Hoyle said the Wells deal was great value for Town, who will receive 20% of the profit if either Jordan Rhodes is sold by Blackburn or Anthony Pilkington by Norwich.

He said the purchase of Wells had been budgeted for, but players would “inevitably” have to go out of the door.

“We have bought Nahki to help us go further, he is too expensive for anything else,” added Hoyle.

“We’ve been a bit short in the final third and we feel we’ve now plugged that gap.He will help our chances going forward. We are doing things in the right way.”

On Town’s other strike target Joe Lolley, he said Kidderminster want him to play in their big FA Cup third-round replay at Peterborough tomorrow.

“We are in negotiations with Kidderminster and we feel we are very close to concluding deal with them,” he said. “They have allowed us to speak to the player, who would like to join us, and he is another exciting prospect.”
