James Vaughan could well have played his last match for Huddersfield Town.

The injury-plagued former Premier League striker has been told his contract won’t be renewed at the end of the season and that he is free to look for another club.

And as Tuesday’s 6.00pm transfer deadline looms, Wigan Athletic are the latest said to be interested in taking the 27-year-old, who has also been linked with Blackburn Rovers and Fulham.

Vaughan, a £600,000 signing from Norwich City two years ago, didn’t feature in the squad as Town lost 1-0 at home to Queens Park Rangers in their latest Championship game.

Instead Chris Powell named in-form development striker Flo Bojaj in his matchday 18.

“Everyone knows James’ situation by now,” said the boss of a player who cost Norwich £2.5m from Everton in 2011.

“We have spoken and we are fine with each other.

“He clearly feels his future is away from here.

“I have to look at the squad and how we move forward.”

Vaughan has played just once this season, from the bench in the 1-1 home draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.

That took his Town tally, including an initial loan spell in 2012-13, to 92 games, with 33 goals.
